$210,000 worth of Google advertising grants can't be used

Over the last 18 months, my involvement with various charities has activated a combined total of $210,000 in free Google advertising. An overwhelming sum. Each charity has a hefty $10k per month to splurge on Google. Whether to raise awareness, reach more donors, or mobilise resources, this free advertising budget can be used for any cause.

The Cost of Living Crisis: An Unexpected Adversary

In an ideal world, this significant advertising budget should have allowed these charities to extend their reach and help more individuals in need significantly. Unfortunately, the world we live in today is far from ideal. The cost of living crisis, which has rampantly escalated in 2023, is hindering the noble efforts of these charities.

One charity CEO poignantly said, "We feel like we're going backwards."

As someone who wears a few hats, one of an SEO trainer, and charity founder, the other of a trustee for a charity. I could not empathise more with this sentiment. It's heartbreaking to witness the struggle of charities who, despite having funds for advertising, must hit the brakes on their philanthropic operations.

The Need for More than Money

The need for more volunteers, fundraisers and resources has never been more pressing. The cost of living crisis has made it impossible for charities to source these critical elements. So here's the irony: we're in a situation where charities have funds for advertising but need more real-life resources and people-power to maximise this opportunity.

The Power of Time and Skills: Beyond Monetary Donations

Charities have always needed more than just money. Today, more than ever, your time and skills can make a tangible difference. Consider offering your skills rather than donating a tenner on a JustGiving page. Are you an expert in social media management? Or are you a dab hand at organising events? You could be a talented graphic designer or a persuasive copywriter.

Your skills can help charities optimise their Google advertising, extend their coverage and draw in more volunteers. And the beauty of it is, it doesn't matter if you can give an hour a week or an hour a day. Every bit of help you can offer can make a difference to these charities and, more importantly, to the people they support.

Conclusion: The Call to Arms

In the face of the ongoing cost of living crisis, we must all rise to the challenge and contribute however we can. Let's not waste $210,000 worth of free Google advertising. It's time to roll up our sleeves and step up. Let's use our skills, time and compassion to ensure that our charities can continue to make a difference. The current situation may be challenging, but remember, we're tougher together.
