Google to Issue Manual Action Penalties for Expired Job Postings

Google to Issue Manual Action Penalties for Expired Job Postings 1 SEO & PPC

Google to Issue Manual Action Penalties for Expired Job Postings 2 SEO & PPCGoogle has refreshed its guidelines advising users that failure to remove expired job postings may result in a manual action Google penalty.

These guidelines relate specifically to job opportunities that have been published to a website using job posting markup. The new guidelines should not affect URLs/Pages for job opportunities that have not been marked up with structured data.

To remove a job posting that is no longer available, do one of the following actions:

  • Remove the JobPosting markup from the page.
  • Remove the page entirely (so that requesting it returns a 404 or 410 status code).
  • Add a noindex meta tag to the page.
  • Ensure the validThrough property is populated and in the past.

When a job posting is filled, recruitment firms can avoid Google penalties by either: removing job posting markup, removing the whole page, or adding a no-index tag to the job posting. The easiest is just deleting the redundant position.

Some will argue that a manual action is an extreme measurement to take against outdated job postings. However, this will help prevent searchers from finding and applying for roles that are no longer available.

This also asks the question — if there’s no deadline indicated on the job posting, how will Google know when it’s lapsed?

Google would presumably have to rely on its users to report expired job postings. The search quality team would then have to verify somehow that the job post is not available anymore.

On the one hand, this could limit the number of expired job postings that show up in Google Search Results. On the other hand, this sounds like a problematic guideline to enforce.

Suffolk News – The News Websites who are tracking you (a-lot)

Suffolk News - The News Websites who are tracking you (a-lot) 3 SEO & PPC

So while we were waiting for our bank to call us back about a payment. We decided to do the same as 4,400 other people do every month,  in Google.co.uk, we searched for ‘Suffolk News’.

We found EADT to have the prominent results but while on the site, we were redirected to App Stores and strange looking websites. We were quite surprised due to EADT being so well known, you could argue that it is ‘Suffolk Main News Paper’?

In the terms of ‘SEO’ – Being redirected, without a valid reason is SPAM and very much against Googles own webmaster guidelines. You can read about that in the link at the bottom of the blog.

We decided to have a look to see what was going on, EADT wouldn’t add spam and add shady code on their website, would they? Why would they do that?

We discovered that EADT are very much tracking you, and sharing that data with over 60 third-party websites, while also using ‘sneaky redirects’ which is something Google hates, along with anyone who is annoyed with being asked to download the latest dating App, even if you are married with two kids and a dog!

So with our findings, we decided to have a look at the top 9 results in Google for the keyword search ‘Suffolk News’ to see who else is tracking you and how much of that data is going to third-party websites.

The websites we found in the Top Nine (written in ranking order) of Google at the time of writing this blog (4/4/18) are:

BBC Suffolk – Two Trackers

BBC Suffolk News BBC Suffolk is at the top result in Google.co.uk. BBC only have two types of trackers on their Suffolk section of the website. This is more than acceptable. They know how many people come to the site and where from, simple but good data. Their main tracking is Google Analytics which is very much the standard for any website on the internet.

EADT – Over 77 Trackers

EADT News Paper Tracking

The second two results in Google is eadt.co.uk/home and their eadt.co.uk/new pages. We found the website to be very slow on an iPhone and a MAC/Laptop. We found that if you are using a mobile device, you will end up being redirected to a website that tries to force you to download an app etc. We found EADT 77 trackers on the website with three of the tracking codes being extremely insecure. One of the most concerning tracking codes is eXelate which buys and sells data to various sources.

Ipswich Star – Over 100 Trackers on some pages

IpswichStar News

Ipswich Star is within the same group as EADT. We expected this website to be flooded with third-party tracking in the same way. Ipswich Star doesn’t appear to have as many tracking codes as their mother site but it is still an extremely high number. We also found two of the tracking codes to be insecure. We also found some tracking codes that are linked to websites that buy and sell data. We also double checked the website in their news section of the website, we recorded over 100 tracking codes on that one page.

ITV Anglia – 8 Trackers

ITV Suffolk

We were pleasantly surprised with ITV Anglia. We expected them to be flooded with tracking codes because they are paid for by advertising. We found the industry standard of Google Analytics which is expected. ITV has barely any real tracking on the website at all. We only found two trackers that record traffic with just two others related to advertising. The remaining four codes were related to having social sharing buttons or video players.

Suffolk Constabulary – 8 Trackers

Suffolk Police News

We only listed Suffolk Constabulary because Google ranking for a news-related term. However, we can safely presume that its one of the most popular news type websites around for crime or campaigns. We expected Suffolk Police to have a lot more tracking and data filtering services than we thought. We only found eight with four of the tracking codes being related to Facebook. We would presume Suffolk Constabulary would use social media to their advantage, if a crime happened in Sudbury, they can easily target people within 10 miles of Sudbury while not including unrelated people in Ipswich.

Independent Suffolk – 63 Trackers

Independent Suffolk

Independent Suffolk has over 63 types of tracking codes on their websites. We looked into what type of tracking they have, most of it is related to selling advertising space, one of the most known tracking codes is called ‘BlueKai’ who have been accused of invasion of privacy more than once. Independent are also using services such as ‘ScoreCard Research Beacon’ which is a well-known service that records anonymous information about users so websites can improve their content etc.

Heart Suffolk – 26 Trackers

Heart FM Suffolk News

Heart is using 26 tracking codes on their Suffolk section of the website. We have found that this website is not classed as ‘secure’ because they are not using something called HTTPS. Banks, Police and Google have all stated that websites should be using SSL/HTTPS. Heart appears to be gathering data so they can build up a database of user behaviour, it appears they are focused on tracking people who are classed as ‘buyer intent’. Heart do sell advertising on the website so we expect third-party websites to be sharing Heart’s data so they can show adverts of interest to a user.

Please don’t get us wrong here, we love data, we love tweaking and playing with websites to make them perform better for us, clients and their users. We believe using website data in the most ethical way, we don’t even store personal data other than ‘hits’ to our websites which will record the data in the points below. There is no real need to install tracking code over tracking code, there is no reason at all to send anyone to a third party website without the user actually knowing, and agreeing.

  • How many hits
  • Where those hits have come from, such as a search engine or social media.
  • Where the rough location is of that traffic,
  • What web browser they are using, mostly so we know a website looks and performs as it should.
  • We don’t record IP addresses for more than 30 days – We have no need for it unless it is from a spammer and we will simply block it.

There is nothing wrong with tracking website users at all but there is a very fine line between tracking to improve a users experience and stalking them. We all need to question websites about data, how they track, store and use it.

Google Webmaster Guidelines – Sneak Redirects

p.s SEOMERS use five tracking services on our website. Two are related to Google Analytics, Two ‘live chat’ codes which is more of a chatting system rather than ‘tracking’ and the other is called ‘Gravatar’ which is a WordPress feature for people who may comment on our blogs, so they can use custom avators.

Research your Competitors Keywords and Services for free (Guide One)

Competitors teach you SEOHave you found yourself looking at your competitors, trying to see what they provide, are they selling something that you could too?

Is your competitor’s website is much larger than yours? Are you always finding them in search engines more than your own? Maybe they are telling you that business is great but only started to trade six months ago?

Not everyone has a budget for tools or an {{seo}} consultant. Once a month we will be providing simple guides that will help you get your SEO performing better. This month we focus on how to research what keywords your competitors might be using.

Here is a trick that anyone with a computer, basic Excel skills and a spare 10 minutes can use to find out what keywords a website is targeting in Google, find content for your own ideas or merely compare your websites.

Use this data so you can get an overview, tweak your website, do not just copy them, that is theft, not research.

Step One: Find a the Competitor’s Sitemap Most websites will have a will something called a XML sitemap. It is normally located here [website].com/sitemap.xml

Step Two: Copy the Full Sitemap URL from the web browser

Step Three: Open up Excel. Choose ‘Data’ in the menu bar, then ‘From web’

Step Four: Enter the sitemap.xml URL into the popup, then select the sitemap. This will import the URLs into a usable format

Step Five: Extract the MetaData of the pages. One of the many free tools is this website. At the bottom of the page, you will have the option to download a CSV file.

Step Six: Exploit the Data for your Research

Now you will have the competitors data. Use your imagination — there’s a lot that you can do with this information — Find keywords you could convert into traffic, get blog ideas, find special deals you didn’t they offer!

Some quick tricks to sort the data into digestible chunks.

Meta Keywords

  • Some sites still use the meta keywords tag to keep track of keywords, which gives lots keywords in the CSV’s “Meta Keyword” field to work with straight away.
    • No sorting required

Title Tags

  • Title tags are a great place to start looking, they frequently contain keywords that they are targeted for Google search rankings.
  • It’s extremely common for title tags be formatted like this Buy Red Dresses | We’re the #1 Dress Company!
  • You can now split those up into different cells with this spreadsheet formula: =SPLIT(B2,"|")

URL

  • Keywords are normally included in the URL split by dashes in most cases. Arguably a keyword in the page URL is more important than the title tags.
  • Those can be extracted with these formulas:

=REGEXREPLACE(REGEXEXTRACT(A2, "\.com\/(.*)"), "[^a-zA-Z0-9]", " ")
Removes the base URL and replaces all non-alphanumeric characters in the path with spaces:

=REGEXREPLACE(REGEXEXTRACT(A2, "\.com\/(.*)"), "[^a-zA-Z]", " ")

Removes all non-alphabetical (removes numbers as well)

Note: If the domain you downloaded is not a .com (a .co.uk or other TLD), change the “.com” in either of those to your competitors TLD.

If you don’t know how to add a formula to Excel then simply watch the video below

7 WEBSITE MISTAKES TO AVOID BEFORE EVEN HAVING ONE

7 WEBSITE MISTAKES TO AVOID BEFORE EVEN HAVING ONE 4 SEO & PPCNo one ever said getting started online was easy – but we’ve all seen a few disasters in our time.  Some of the ways in which we start out on the web really do us no favours whatsoever – and while some of these factors can be fairly easy to spot, a lot of them go unnoticed, astonishingly regularly.  Let’s take a look at seven of the biggest ways you can really set yourself back before you really get started.

Avoiding Your Homework

Too many people are keen to jump straight in and build a catch-all website and fill it with content that appeals to a wider competition – this really is doing yourself a disservice.  What you should be doing is plenty of research – honing your online presence to a specific need an audience to capture their interest and to provide them with a one-stop shop.  Don’t just guess – do your homework.

Avoiding Any Planning Whatsoever

This is a big one – plans do matter, and when it comes to ensuring that your business and brand survives online, you’re going to need to know where you want to go and what it is you want to do.  This is essential for communicating with web designers as well as your prospective clients – build yourself some goals, set yourself some targets and be ruthless – reward yourself at the small milestones but for your own sake, think big – don’t do this on the fly.

Letting a Website Fester

Yep – one of the biggest ways you can truly shoot a website in the foot before getting started is leaving it to its own devices.  You’re not going to start ranking highly for keywords people are searching for on Google unless you partner with a professional who knows what they’re doing, or at least work on it yourself – Anyone can rank “rent elephants in Ipswich” but if no one is searching for it, it is not {{seo}} or marketing.

Keeping Your Network Tight

You’re likely to be tempted to market your brand and your social media to your family and friends – this makes sense particularly if you’re just starting out and are unsure about what you might be doing – but you’re going to need to start branching out and approaching people who are beyond your network to get long-term success to come to you.  Facebook isn’t being particularly kind to businesses right now with regard to proposed changes to the News Feed – and you should take advantage of really branching out.

Working With the Wrong People

This goes for all walks of life and work – but work with toxic people who are more about their own success and less about yours and you’re only going to dwindle.  Partner with firms and professionals who offer genuine support – build mutual relationships for long-term success! You want the right men, not yes men! (or woman).

Poor Money Management

When you’re promoting yourself online, you may be tempted to leap into something like Facebook promotions – but a lot of these social media campaigns – the funded ones – aren’t as simple or as cut and dried as something like Pay Per Click.  Facebook promotion, where you pay a premium for a few added likes or shares, can have a habit of getting a little bit out of grasp – so be careful!

Taking the Cheap Route

Spending less now on what might be getting sold as professional SEO for a bargain rate might sound worthwhile, but long term, you’re in for a world of poor results.  Cheap, poorly-realised SEO is hardly worth the money you fork out for – go with reputation and a firm that has a cast-iron plan – don’t be afraid to invest more in getting factors such as your long-term SEO sorted out sooner rather than later – or you’ll be paying for it in the long run. Found a website for £50 for your new e-commerce store? Are you sure the exact same template hasn’t been used in 163 otehr websites? Will it grow with your business?

Why You Should Apply SEO to Your Social Media, Too

The power of social media can hardly be denied – you only have to look at the fact that Facebook now has a staggering two billion users to understand that the reach potential is incredible.  However, it’s never been particularly clear nor cut and dried with regard to how much of an influence social media such as Twitter, Instagram, Facebook and more have upon Google’s rankings.  With this in mind, however, {{seo}} and web development experts such as ourselves have needed to keep an open mind with regard to the potential that could well lie in wait.

Social media may not necessarily have direct impact upon Google rankings – as far as we know – but the potential it can have upon ranking factors and search listings lies in the fact that it’s an incredible platform for sharing content and, therefore, for earning links.  All SEO experts should therefore be more than ready to utilise social media for its promotional power rather than for its content – and this means that you can use it to promote your own links and earn citations from other social media pages and accounts who wish to link to you.  There’s never been a better way to get seen, read and visited – and regularly attending to your social media presence can help to build your brand and thus increase awareness of you in social platform search and more.  Facebook, for example, is its own little world away from Google.

Social media does have a role in Google results in the form of personalised SERPs, for example, if you were to search for a brand or celebrity, you may well be supplied with links to their associated public profiles.  This should never be overlooked – social media presence has such an impact upon public consciousness nowadays that it can directly impact upon your authority and worth – so keeping up to social matters can only help to improve your profile.

It’s also worth bearing in mind that social media can be treated as a completely alternative entity to Google search – as it can work hand in hand with SEO to help build a healthy, popular brand that can be found on the majority of the big platforms your audience is likely to be using.  Social media targeting can be run completely separate to SEO – but in a world where the two are running parallel to one another in getting word spread about local businesses and useful services, it remains to be said that pairing the two together can’t do any harm – and we’ll show you how.

Google Guarantee. Review Site Killer? (not UK yet)

Google GuaranteeGoogle is at it again, and why shouldn’t they be? They are always on the lookout for ways to help improve the search experience, and as market leaders, they are in the best position to do so – even if it does mean keeping {{seo}} heads (such as yours truly) on their toes with every algorithm change. In any case, their latest beta testing seems to have local SEO in its sights – meaning that, for you and me as searchers, we could be getting more reliable results.

Google Guarantee, as it has been named, is a scheme through which Google intends to work around and fill up loopholes that have been used by shady businesses to try and fool innocent searchers out of a fair bit of money. Essentially, the current local SEO system put forward by Google allows AdWords and Google My Business pages to pop up tailored to your search query and local area (unless specified in-search). All good, you would assume – until you bear in mind that more than a few people have been scammed by con artists promising cheap deals only to find hidden fees once they are in deep with them.

Essentially, what Google is looking to is vet businesses who may appear in local search. We do not entirely blame them – legitimate firms like yours and ours could easily be pushed back by firms who are leading with white hat SEO, but black hat intentions. Businesses will, therefore, be able to apply for vetting by the big G to get all-important verification on every search – to, therefore, assure searchers that you are the real deal – and to ensure that the playing field is, once again, level.

It’ll even be possible for consumers to make a Google Guarantee request, they advise. This means that searchers and buyers will be able to claim up to a certain amount of money lost – though they will only be able to do so should a business be Google Guarantee verified. Therefore, it surely makes sense to allow Google to do a quick audit – particularly if you have nothing to hide. Let Google screen your licensing, insurance and trading data and you could end up with a nice tick next to your brand name the next time you are searched for.

The emergence of Google Guarantee might well put review sites and tools a little out of joint – after all, there are a fair few sites out there that are solidly dependent upon visitor and user ratings – take TripAdvisor, for example. However, it is not essentially clear as yet how far Google Guarantee will go. It’s a service with good intentions at its core – one which will bring big changes to local SEO – and one which could change the way we view reviews for good. At the moment, reviews are easily faked.

Suffolk Business Stars. Yes we ranked it

So yes.

Suffolk Business Stars Edit – This post is at least a year old. We deleted the site shortly after this post. We’ve had a lot of feedback from people thanking us, they have managed to work out who can really do what’s right for their business. Just because someone sells something, it doesn’t mean they can do the job.

We did build a website called suffolkbusinessstars.com. We have been asked why we kept it a secret; we did not.

When we built the website, we left a couple of tell-tale signs and signals to show who built the website. We purposely left signals easy to find for the people who may be a bit more technical about web design, marketing and web development.

However, the one thing we have not publicly said is why we took the time, which was less than 10 minutes to build the site.

The website was ranked on the first page of Google UK within six hours

It had a verified Google maps listing within 12 hours. It was found without us telling a single person about the website being or going live. The site was found organically and shared on Facebook, LinkedIn and Google plus. The website was also mentioned on a few business communities and websites, without us telling a soul. People found it, shared it and talked about it for us.

We had no less than 20 private messages on Facebook about the website, around ten messages on LinkedIn and a few from Twitter. The website also received nearly 1000 hits from various sources according to Google analytics. We have also taken on two clients and sent out three proposals due to this website. You have to admit that is rather impressive results from a low-quality site but with a strong message.

The website goes against everything a small number of web gurus in the group Suffolk business stars keeps shouting about, purely to talk the talk.

The website is slow to load, barely has any content and is mostly written in something called JavaScript. Google and other search engines are not massive fans of using JavaScript, although they have got better at dealing with it. The site is not optimised properly on all mobile devices. It was on purpose, yet it still ranked in Google and people are still talking about it, two weeks later.

According to Google themselves the keyword search “Suffolk business stars” only has around 20 searches every 30 days on its search engine. We generated over 1000 visits to the website by using less than 150 words within five days for around 5 pounds which is the average price for registering a domain name. +10 minutes of our time.

As you can see the website is also a single page that will never change.

So we did this purely to prove the point that you do not always need a full-blown website, with lots and lots of content and any other buzzwords, combined with these all in one amazing web packages, which rarely perform. People will not ‘just come to you’ if you have a website and only that.

All you need is a strong message, product or services that people really need or care about.

So hopefully if you are a business owner reading this, you will start to question the following things.

Can my web company honestly do SEO, build my website and bring customers to it for such a tiny fee? More to the point will your cheap website end up costing you thousands of pounds in sales? Can your web company really deal with your marketing, hosting and improve your conversion rates? Can they prove it?

Think of it like this. Just because you have a shop with a big sign, it does not mean you do not have to market your business to the next street, town or county. Your website is never 100% finished, your marketing should never run out of options, and you should never stop wanting more sales.

We do not directly offer design, hosting or web development but we do market websites. We do bring new customers to you. We do help you convert old customers better. We do get other websites talking about your business and your website. That is what we do and have proven

Just because the all in one package provider has a massive audience, sometimes not quite honest reviews and able to talk the talk, they might not be able to walk the walk and bring customers to you. They may even completely wreck your outdated looking website which could very well be doing better than you thought but your new web company simply hasn’t researched at all. Read this

This case study, we use the term loosely is not against web designers, web developers or any other Internet marketing companies. We work with many graphic designers and web builders (from SBS) on a day-to-day basis and ones that not only generate amazing websites but performing online businesses. This article and the points made are simply against the all in one package that rarely do anything at all, except empty bank accounts.

We have been a member of Suffolk business stars for over five years. We have seen a change from a business community to a source of often bad and low-quality information that sometimes has a negative impact on local businesses. It is free for all where people often recommend their mates, networking groups or people that they heard were good.

We have commented on bits of advice that we have seen in the group to find our comments have simply gone missing.

All we are trying to do is to show that services with massive fan clubs may not be able to do the best job for you and your business. We have seen way too many GOOD designers and marketing companies picking up the pieces after a ‘have a go guru’ takes a website, and trashes it.

Take a look for yourself and read some of the web design and marketing advice provided in the group, then think back to this article.

Edit, another reminder– This post is at least a year old. We deleted the site shortly after this post. We’ve had a lot of feedback from people thanking us, they have managed to work out who can really do what’s right for their business. Just because someone sells something, it doesn’t mean they can do the job.

Looking to Move to HTTPS? We’re Offering an Almost-Free Transfer

Looking to Move to HTTPS? We’re Offering an Almost-Free Transfer 5 SEO & PPCHTTPS, if you haven’t heard, is the way to go.  Websites that fail to offer their visitors and customers the basics in terms of secure browsing and e-commerce fall foul of all sorts of accusations – and while porting your site over or setting yourself up on HTTPS in the first place can mean additional costs, it just makes sense.  Think of it this way – if your online store becomes vulnerable to an attack and you stand to lose hundreds of customer records to an unwelcome visitor, are you fully prepared to take ownership for such a loss?  Maybe not.  Therefore, prevention is key – and getting yourself registered on HTTPS to ensure safe, impenetrable data transfer is the way forward – take it from us.  Google loves it, and browsers everywhere expect to be protected.  It’s time to take the bull by the horns if you haven’t already.

To help encourage take-up of HTTPS, we at SEOmers are proud to announce that we are to provide transfer and set-up on the secure protocol for virtually free – meaning that, providing you fulfil certain criteria, we’ll move you over to HTTPS for next to nothing.  What’s the cost, you ask?  Just £10 – minimum – which we ask that you donate to the Ipswich Winter Night Shelter (IWNS).

No one deserves to be made homeless – and with over a hundred (more than statistics show) people living rough on the streets of Ipswich with little means of getting themselves back on their feet, it is down to the fantastic work of organisations such as the IWNS to ensure that so many people – young and old alike – can get themselves on the straight and narrow.  The cause is very close to our hearts here at SEOmers – and we are therefore proud to be able to encourage minimum donations to the IWNS in return for HTTPS coverage.  Rather than let the cost go to the firm, we’d prefer that you make a donation to help those in need – and in return, we’ll keep your website safe.

We also ask that the site you wish to transfer to HTTPS be WordPress based with your own SSL certificate (most web hosts provide for free) – to demonstrate that you have active interest in keeping your visitors safe.  We also request that you provide us with access to your Google Analytics data and your admin/hosting dashboard – so that we may implement these changes for you.  Don’t worry – your privacy and security is assured.

Make a difference to people who are unable to help themselves – while ensuring your visitors are safe to browse and buy from you.  Contact us today on 01473 760140 email us at your convenience – or visit the IWNS website for more information on their incredible work and for more details on how to make a donation.

The Visual Differences Between Experience and just having the Tools

Cadwell ParkAnyone who has spoken to Dan over the years will know that he is very much into motorcycles. It’s no secret that he is often at race tracks with his mates, having a bit of downtime. (no pun intended, that’s his photo on the left)

On his late night social travels, he spotted a few posts from a chap called Steven Morgan. He was sharing photos of him and his son enjoying a motorcycle track-day, Steven was on his ‘proper bike’ and his son on an electric motorbike, It looks like a really good day out between father and son.

Dan spotted one of the photos Steven shared. He is holding his son, perched on his electric bike over one of Cadwell Parks most famous parts called The Mountain it’s the real reason why anyone on two wheels goes to the track, it’s simply amazing.  You can clearly see Dad holding up his son. Dan offered to remove Dad from the photo, he said he’d try his best but he isn’t a graphic designer, he just has the tools which is PhotoShop in this case.

Steven was really happy with Dan’s attempt but Dan wasn’t. if you look close, the crash barriers on Dan’s attempt isn’t that great, he isn’t a designer or claims to be one just because he has the toys.

The post caught the eye of Craig Grew from KeaKeative. He decided to have his own ‘attempt’ which took him less than ten minutes. He sent Dan two or three versions of the photo, each one getting more and more fine tuned to detail. Our point is hopefully a really clear one. We can all buy the tools but we can’t buy the skill and experience that comes from someone who really knows their trade inside out, and still keeps learning the craft they sell.

The photo went from simply removing Dad from the photo to ‘smudging’ the front wheel to make it look like he is moving forwards.

So, you might be asking whats the point of this post? In our industry, we are littered with a lot of businesses selling websites, marketing and all sorts. Just because you have the tools, it doesn’t mean you are an expert. They might have a hammer and chisel but can they really carve the fine detail of the Appennine Colossus in Italy?

The finest, sometimes barely noticeable fine detail of your brand or services can have the most impact. So when you want to ‘have a go’ at something, just because you’ve Google’d a guide or downloaded an amazing tool, just ask yourself… Is the fine detail better than someone who does it for a living? More to the point, will you even notice that the fine tune is missing?

Ranty SEO Blog post alert!!

We have been busy but sadly for the wrong reasons. Here are some screen shots of business owners Google Analytics. If you are unsure of what that is, analytics is a tracker to see how many people visit a website. Put it this way, if you have a website and don’t know if you have analytics installed then speak to someone because you will be losing customers every single day and not know about it.

What do these businesses have in common? They have all bought “{{seo}} Ready” sites from local designers in Suffolk. These people are claiming that their wonderful design will turn into a cash machine the second it’s launched without any planning or historic review, it will have lots of traffic and everything will simply be amazing.

“SEO Ready” means nothing at all. However, a designer who claims they ‘do SEO’ can cost you thousands which can sometimes take MONTHS to recover after the damage has been done.

The one thing we see ALL THE TIME is that designers design, coders code but they rarely plan site launches correctly… That is the difference between making something pretty and understanding the consequences, before making ANY website changes at all.

PLAN EVERYTHING!! If you do not know how then speak to us BEFORE your designer could potentially ruin your online income. It takes us less than an hour to plan everything to work WITH your designer.

If you don’t know the difference between a good and bad designer then contact us. We will give you some questions to ask before you buy their services.

We’d like to state – We are not anti-designer. We are anti ‘have a go at it’ services that cause business owners big issues that people like us have to sort out. We work with some fantastic designers day in, day out.

So, take a look at the screen grabs below. This is what poor planning looks like, sadly.

Example One – a national website that was getting nearly two million visits every month. We personally helped the site improve from a few hundred visits to millions between 2013-2015 until the site was sold. The site appeared to have slipped with traffic after a year so the new site owner used a Suffolk based company to ‘refresh’ the site.  The unplanned ‘refresh’ caused the traffic drop as you can see below. The site owner waited for a few more months while the design company ‘had a go’ at fixing the issues. We spotted the issue within 17 minutes, sadly we weren’t contacted for well over 12 months so doubt we’d get the same PR buzz as we did back in 2014. The site owner decided to cut his £30.000 loses.

National SEO Rankings Drop

Example Two – A Suffolk business that accepted a proposal from a local designer who was chosen because they had so many mentions in a well known Facebook group called ‘Suffolk Business Stars‘. The agency that designed the site said to the client ‘you only get 500 visits a month so we don’t have to do anything’. The truth behind this client is that their average customer was worth £1500 at a minimum, they could only serve Suffolk, they will never get traffic into the thousands because of their localised audience. The new site was launched as ‘SEO completed’ without any research at all, they’d told the client they could manage the SEO which resulted in the issue below.

Sudbury Web Design SEO Issue

Example Three – Another local business, wrecked by a local Suffolk based designer. The average sale for this client was £150, they’d easily make 50 sales per month for their most high-end product. The peak season for selling their products is middle of March to end of April, with sales increasing to over 30 sales per week. Sadly. this income from their ‘shoddy website’ was lost due to being replaced with ‘an awesome website’ – The awesome website undone years of link building, PR and Social Media traffic… Purely because the designer ‘thought what would be best’ without any forwarding planning at all.

Long Melford Web Design

This post sounds like we’re having a go at designers, we’re not at all. We love designers, coders, PR companies and anyone who gives their clients everything they can to make sure that the person who is paying them, gets the return on investment, not run a massive loss. We love working anyone who needs our help, the same as when we call in graphic and web designers when we need their help.

If you’re about to invest in a new website then get in touch. We will be able to review where your website is now, and where you need it to go.
